How to protect your Windows 10 PC
Turn Windows Defender on or off
When you start up Windows 10 for the first time, Windows Defender is on and working to protect your PC by scanning for malicious software. It will turn itself off if you install another anti-virus app.
Windows Defender uses real-time protection to scan everything that you download or run on your PC. Turn off real-time protection temporarily by selecting the Start icon button, then selecting Settings > Update & security > Windows Defender.
Where’s Security Essentials?
If you have Windows 10, you can’t get Microsoft Security Essentials. But you don’t need it, because you already have Windows Defender, which provides the same level of protection.
In the search bar, type Windows Defender.
Pick Windows Defender in the results. You’ll be able to check your computer and your level of virus protection.
Updating Windows Defender
Windows Update automatically downloads updates for Windows Defender to help keep your PC safe and protect it from attacks.
